Where to even start with Alex and Bill and their beautiful downtown NYC wedding!

I met them both while I was travelling and shooting in Nicaragua last year. Bill was living in the city of San Juan del Sur and Alex was in the process of moving there to be with him. I became fast friends with them both and their pup, Butcher. We decided to set up a little sunset beach couple’s session, which would later turn out to be their pseudo engagement session! Political unrest broke out across Nicaragua shortly after my return to the country and soon everyone was leaving and heading back to their former homes.

For Alex and Bill this meant choosing between NYC and Vancouver. While they were in the midst of sorting out their lives, Bill secretly flew to Vancouver for a surprise visit with Alex, where he got down on one knee and asked her to share her life with him forever! She of course said yes!! She reached out shortly after and we joked that we had already done their engagement session, but quickly started planning for their downtown NYC wedding to be held in early January! Being a part of Alex and Bill’s day as their photographer and as a guest was a complete honour. To know them living barefoot in the jungle with daily beach hangs to meeting them in downtown NYC was a complete change, but the change looks good on them!

I’m so excited for you guys to start this next chapter of your lives together, sharing new experiences in a new city!

Meet the couple

What were your top 3 most important things while planning the wedding?

We only had four months to plan our wedding ( I was travelling for work for about two of them) and we are both pretty low maintenance so we approached it very simply.

  1. Great People- we had a smaller ceremony and dinner with 60 people and then for cocktails and dancing we had about 70 more

  2. Great Food- The Beekman and Crafted Hospitality created the perfect menu and wine pairing that was refined yet approachable

  3. Great Music- Our friends Blu Detiger and Nick Brown dj’d. Blu played bass while she dj’d and it was epic!
Why you chose The Beekman and NYC to get married?

We were looking for an intimate wedding venue for winter in NYC. The Beekman was built in the 1800’s and was Manhattan’s original skyscraper. It was redone only a few years ago and they kept so many original elements, in particular the gorgeous atrium in the center of the building. It was the perfect mix of glamour and art with a cozy New York feel.

A little about your and Bill’s love story?

We met in Nicaragua in 2016. Bill was running a boutique hotel called Maderas Village and I was sent there by Lululemon to lead a yoga retreat. A few days in we sat across from each other at dinner and I swear it was love at first sight. We spent two years long distance from Vancouver and Nicaragua and eventually ended up in NYC in June of 2018. We would plan trips all over the world just to see each other for a few days. The long stretches were incredibly hard but we were serious about each other and both knew that this was something to make work. We have been through a lot together including having to leave Nicaragua two weeks after I officially moved there do to the civil unrest going on in the country.
